How well do you know the Cayman Islands? If you think your knowledge of the nature, history, religion and culture of the islands is pretty spot on, you could be in with a chance of winning $5,000. And even if it turns out you are no expert, you and your team can have a fun-filled day of discovery (on Discovery Day, no less) criss-crossing the island, hitting all the major landmarks and points of historical interest as part of the island-wide Scavenger Hunt.
Organised by dms Broadcasting, the first Discovery Day Scavenger Hunt takes place on Monday, May 21. With the help of the Department of Tourism, organisers have come up with questions and clues relating to key sites around Grand Cayman, which scavengers must solve or answer for points.
Fifty teams of four will take to the road and test how much they do or do not know about the Island they call home. Prizes go to teams who collect the most points, rather than those that finish first. In addition to the first place cash prize, the second and third prizes are trips to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, respectively.
All teams will check in at Dolphin Discovery at 9am on Monday, where they will receive their challenge packs and instructions before the hunt kicks off at 10am.
The hunt will take the teams through all the districts, stopping at landmarks along the way including Heroes Square, Smith Cove, the National Gallery, the Turtle Farm, Pedro St. James and Mission House, the Blow Holes and the Wreck of the Ten Sails. At each landmark, teams will solve questions and collect souvenirs for points.
All teams are due back at Dolphin Discovery by 4pm so points can be calculated before the giving prizes. All four dms Broadcasting stations will be onsite and the resident dolphins will perform a special show.
One hundred per cent of registration fees will be donated to the Mind’s Eye Restoration Project, the former residence of visionary artist Miss Lassie. This project was chosen as a fitting charity due to the cultural significance of the site.
